In literacy we read the story altogether and used time conjunctions to retell and order what happened. On Monday we made salt dough gingerbread men and we have been writing our own instructions on how we made them. We have been using imperative verbs to make sure our instructions are clear and writing simple sentences using our phonics knowledge.
This half term we will be focussing on traditional tales, with a new story to learn all about each week. This week our story has been The Gingerbread Man. In Maths we have been recapping knowledge on 3D shapes and identifying their properties. We have been looking back at what a face, edge and vertex is and identifying these on different shapes. Some of us have even been counting how many of each some shapes have. We have been using shapes to build bridges for the gingerbread man so he can cross the water safely and naming which shapes we have used. We have also been going on shape hunts and playing shape guessing games, which we have enjoyed.

The children returned to Year 4 this week after the half term break. We began by beginning a new unit of study in English where the children were looking at the features that are used in an instruction text. The children consolidated their learning by planning and creating their own instruction text.
In maths the children continued learning about fractions, looking at equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers. In the afternoons, rehearsals for the spring production are well under way! This term Year 2 have begun to explore Space! We have enjoyed sharing our prior knowledge of Space but also deepening our knowledge by completing our own research using a range of different sources such as books, websites and videos. Next week, using this knowledge, we will be making our own space mobiles!
Have a look at the NASA Kids website for some more inspiration: https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html In English, we have been using our Space work to inspire our descriptive writing. We wrote character descriptions about Buzz Lightyear, thinking about his appearance as well as his personality. Then, we created our own aliens based on the story. ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and used our pictures to help us to describe our new characters. Claire Freedman, the author of ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ has written other, similar novels. How many can you find? What similarities can you spot? |
