As part of our program to improve the culture of exercise and healthy eating at East Tilbury Primary School & Nursery, we have taken part in various activities throughout the year so far. Below are some of those undertaken so far.

Earlier in the year, Year 4 children successfully completely a six week program based upon the following themes:

What is a healthy lifestyle?

What we eat, looking at food groups

Fun fitness sessions

Looking at different activities

What children want and what they need

How feelings affect behaviour

Early Years and Key Stage 1 children benefited from workshops on how to clean your teeth properly, from Grace the Dental Nurse, following on from the news coverage of growing cases of tooth decay in children of this age.

Later, the whole school took part in a sponsored skip in a bid to raise money for The British Heart Foundation.  This is a charity which raises money to support research into heart disease and which some of you know is a charity close to our heart.  Throughout the day children wore red and were encouraged to complete fitness tasks as Mrs Quasalbash ran a series of workshops with the children across the school.

Due to the amazing support from parents we were able to raise the total sum of £2189.69.

As a reward for raising so much money we were able to host the Juice Bicycle in school where children were given the opportunity to power a blender to make a refreshing healthy fruit drink for their breakfast.

To continue to raise awareness of the importance of eating healthily, we have also introduced stickers and bookmarks which children collect daily for choosing healthier options for their lunches.  These stickers are added up each week and a display in the Key Stage 2 hall shows which team eats the healthiest each week, linking into our current houses point system.  So far Cambridge and Bath are joint leaders but this could all change by the end of the year!

What a wonderful way to mark our first Year 4 and 5 Spring Production in our new primary school. Our staging of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was tremendous, bringing together work done with the Royal Opera House through the Trailblazer project, featuring fabulous dancing, scripts written by our pupils, exhilarating singing and wonderful costumes and setting. Well done everybody!

As we came to the end of our unit enquiring into the Central Idea that, 'Through the arts, people use different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness as human beings', we made some Easter eggs, inspired by some of the African prints and animals that we have been exploring.

Delicious ice-cream...or not!

Children in Year 5 made ice-cream manually using just flavoured milk, sugar, ice and salt.

We made predictions about what we thought would happen, explaining our reasoning. We then observed and described how the milk changed state from liquid to solid in the process of making ice-cream.

5AA said that their ice-cream was delicious and everyone wanted to try the experiment again at home. Some people in 5KF said that theirs was salty - perhaps they accidentally put the salt in with the milk instead of in with the ice in a separate bag! Why don't you give it a try: Put half a cup of flavoured milk in a zipper bag with four tablespoons of caster sugar. Place this bag in another small food bag and tie it to give it extra protection from the ice and salt mixture. Put some ice and half a cup of salt into a large zipper bag, then place your small bag of milk mixture inside this larger bag. Seal the large bag securely and shake vigorously for five minutes. Carefully open your small bag, being careful not to allow any salty water to get into it as you serve and enjoy your ice-cream!

5DC ready with great expectation

On Friday 20th March 2015, Year 5 joined the whole School as we prepared to witness the solar eclipse. We made pinhole cameras out of card to help us view the eclipse outside safely. Many people use pinholes to project an image of the Sun onto the ground and we had expected that the projected image would show the crescent of the Sun as the Moon gobbled up its disc. Unfortunately, the cloudy skies made it tricky to see the eclipse, however, we watched the eclipse live through the BBC Stargazing news.
