Earlier in the week, children learned about, school, religion and other aspects of life in Germany. They also learnt about St George's day and joined the rest of the school in creating a giant St George's Cross. It has been a fantastic week of celebrating differences across the whole school, while reminding ourselves of the importance of laws in Britain and how we can contribute positively to society.
As part of this week’s Multicultural Week activities, Year 2 enjoyed a German feast, including sausages, hams, cheeses, and home-made bread. Children were very adventurous in trying flavours they had never tried before and many discovered new foods that they really like the taste of.

As part of their Unit of Enquiry looking at how people work together to achieve a common purpose in a workplace, Year 5 have written some information posters, following their visit to the Bata Reminiscence Resource Centre Open Day. The actual Bata factories are just across the road from our school and it has been great for the children to focus again on local history, with so many sources of evidence readily available to us.
We are really grateful to the BRRC for their support during this unit of work, they have provided us with so much information and so many interesting artefacts. “It’s really fun here because you get to do loads of projects, like the baby chicks in 2HM. At lunchtime, we came and were allowed to hold and stroke them. We watched some of the eggs hatching and noticed that one of the chicks was rolling another egg around, maybe trying to help it hatch. We have learnt that yellow chicks are boys and the orangey-brown ones are girls.
Before we went to the National Gallery, we didn’t think it would be fun, but it was and we learnt lots about the pictures. It’s good here because even when we have had news that has made us upset, our teachers and friends have helped us.” Year 2 have been patiently waiting for several weeks, first for the delivery of their eggs, then for the arrival of their chicks. During Science Week last term, Year 2 prepared to receive their eggs, learning about life cycles and what chicks would need to survive and grow healthily. When the eggs arrived on Tuesday, they were well-prepared and set the incubator up in a special place. They have kept a log of the date and time of the birth of each chick, recording this information in a table. They agree that the best things come to those who wait! As with the birth of any new born, Year 2 have welcomed many visitors from across the school to see the new arrivals and they have all left with new knowledge about eggs and chickens. Early Years and KS1 have been enjoying getting used to using iPads, we have purchased a set of 30 iPads for Early Years and KS1 to use- they will soon be as efficient as many of the KS2 pupils (especially Y6) are in their use of iPads, which benefit the learning of the KS2 pupils.
If you know of any brilliant educational apps for either KS1 or KS2 we’d be delighted to hear from you. |
