On Friday 22nd May, the last day of the half term, the entire community of East Tilbury Primary School & Nursery celebrated an Alice in Wonderland Equity Action in the glorious sunshine! Children had been enquiring into a number of ideas, using Lewis Carroll's famous story as a vehicle, as well as looking into local heritage through the Bata estates. Friday's event was a Hatter's Tea Party, with performances from children across the school, party food, games and work from the half term on display for parents, carers and other visitors to enjoy. Guests at the event included the Mayor Cllr Liddiard and his Deputy Mayor, MP Stephen Metcalfe, some of our Governors past and present, and representatives from local community groups. Children raised hundreds of pounds through this event to support the work of the Bata Reminiscence Resource Centre, making another positive contribution to the local community as active young citizens. Staff rallied round as usual to support the event and make all of our visitors feel welcome. Well done everybody!

Some people are calling for there to be a prize for the best displays on the day, so watch this space, if they can get us some more evidence, there might just be another prize giving coming up…

Nursery Dress for the Occasion!

Nursery have recently been learning about seasons as part of their Plants and Growth work. Pippa could tell us what she learnt about the seasons:

‘In Spring everything grows.’

‘In Summer you can wear whatever you want.’

‘In Autumn all the leaves fall off.’

‘In Winter you have to wear something cosy.’

Flynn then talked about how he was dressing his person:

‘I’m dressing him up for the winter snow, because it’s a snowy day. He’s wearing trousers because it’s cold and he wants to play in the snow all day.’

In Year 3 the children have been learning about the life cycles of plants. They conducted an experiment using food dye and celery to investigate how plants absorb water. The children are excited to see whether the celery changes colour as a result of absorbing the food dye!

In preparation for the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the children created mood boards as they considered the process of designing, loosely linking this to their enquiry into the work at the Bata factory. The children also created some masks for their Alice in Wonderland performance for the tea party!

6RM are great role models!

6RM showed great focus during their SATs recently. They worked really hard and should be proud of their efforts. To gain insight into the process of learning we allowed the children to experience the role of a teacher! They were given the challenge to plan, prepare and deliver a lesson based on the curriculum they are currently studying. It was a great success and as well as everything else, the children demonstrated great speaking and listening skills when addressing the class.

In Maths the class have been learning about links between Mathematics and Art, creating interesting tessellations and spirals using straight lines. We were also busily prepared for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, designing and making Viking-style hats that fit into our Unit of Enquiry learning. Did you spot them at the party?

P.E. Curriculum Update

PE in our school has been really enjoyable for the children and staff this past term. It has been full, packed with events, productions, awards and exciting competitions within and outside of school. The rest of this term will be even busier for us as a school and hopefully just as rewarding.

We began the summer term sports after the Easter break. All classes are taking part in striking and fielding lessons as well as athletics, with the exception of Year 3 who are swimming this term. Extracurricular sports during lunchtimes and after school have also changed to tennis, rounders, cricket, and athletics.

Competitions for this term are in full swing within the borough for both key stages, including the Borough Olympics at the end of the term. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 will be selected to represent our school in different sporting competitions such as tennis, athletics, rounders and cricket. We have also entered the boys’ cricket, and mixed rounders leagues for this term. The Year 5 and 6 netball team ended last term with great impact, coming second in the borough competition on 25th April, despite beating the team that went on to take first place in the competition in a three way final. The two teams we had entered in the competition did themselves proud and represented the school brilliantly. Details of all competitions and fixtures can be found on the Healthy Schools and Clubs page, here on our school website.

We have had one extraordinary highlight so far this term, with our key stage 1 children being awarded the PE and Sports Active Essex Award. Only two schools in Thurrock received this award. Two young ladies from Year 2 represented key stage 1, by attending the awards ceremony with Miss Taylor to receive the award and give a speech to the other winning schools. You may have seen their speech in an earlier blog.

Inter house competitions this year have really got houses in the competitive spirit, Warwick succeeded in being sporting champions in our last inter house end ball competition,  and with inter house rounders coming up next week, it could be anyone’s game. You can find full details of inter house competitions on the Healthy Schools and School House Teams page, here on our school website.

We look forward to seeing parents and carers during our sports days after half term, dates can be found on the school calendar.
