It was a dazzling sunny afternoon at the Thurrock Nature Reserve on Wednesday 8th June. Six pupils from Year 4 represented the year group at a special prize giving ceremony for the borough-wide Sculpture on a Pallet Project. Children from our school were the youngest in the competition and waited with baited breath as the winners were announced. Our first cheer was when we won a highly commended award for 4BG’s sculpture, though Mr Barry-Gregory preferred that it wasn’t referred to as ‘the one with all the sand and mud on it’! We were so excited to be presented with certificates by the CEO of the Essex Wildlife Trust for all of our sculptures and to hear about his passion to work with animals from a very young age, as this also tied in well with this week’s Aspirations and Enterprise Week. A huge well done to all of Year 4. You will be able to see our pallets on display as part of a summer art trail from 9 July.

It feels like we’ve hardly been away in Year 4. Two weeks ago, we were working hard to add the finishing touches to our sculptures on pallets, as part of a competition being run by Essex Wildlife Trust to help raise the profile of some of the species on Thurrock’s Biodiversity Action Plan. Some of us will be going along to the prize giving on Wednesday, so watch this space to see how we do.

Now, we have come straight back from the brief break into Aspirations and Enterprise Week and we will be looking at how to prepare for some of the jobs and skills that we would like to have in the future. Never mind ‘Build-a…teddy’, we are going to build a CV! There will be lots of visitors in the school, coming to tell us how they got to do the jobs that they do and Year 4 will have their visitor on Thursday, so we’ll tell you all about it after that.

Today, we started our new Unit of Enquiry, looking at how ancient civilizations have impacted the way we live in modern Europe. We will particularly be looking at how the Ancient Greeks lived. We generated all sorts of questions that we hope to find answers to over the coming weeks.

Hello everybody! It has been a very busy month! In 1EG we have been very busy creating our Pumpkin Soup balloons! We used a variety of different resources such as paint, glue, tissue paper, paper and markers to make remarkable paper mache sculptures. We will be able to show them to you soon!

In Maths, we have been learning about money. We used British coins to “buy” things and give change. This week we are going to practise multiplication.

Well done to Laila, Kelly, Toby, Freddie, Billy, Krrish, Aimee, Jorja, Shannia and Jacob for doing their homework getting a lot of points in Mathletics! Keep up the good work!

Everyone across the school has been busy in their English lessons. Reception have been creating character descriptions based on animals and applying their new understanding of adjectives. Year 1 have been writing their own version of ‘conflict’ stories, inspired by ‘Panda and the Monkey’ and ‘Pumpkin Soup’. Year 3 are developing their skills in diary writing, pretending to be characters from the retro cartoon,’ The Flintstones’. Year 4 are going green with their persuasive letters based on ‘The Lorax’. Year 5 are spooking everyone by creating atmosphere and building suspense in their haunted stories and Year 6 are turning themselves into film critics with their outstanding reviews. And finally...Year 2. Well done to all of the children for their outstanding efforts during SATs. They were able to use everything they learn in their reading, writing and grammar lessons to complete their tests and should be very proud of themselves.
