Children have already been getting excited by science this year as they began their topics for this half term.
Year 1 have been learning about animals and humans and have identified animals based on their footprint. Children have also been using artistry to draw the other half of an animal when given an image of one half. They have also been identifying and labelling human body parts.
In Year 2 they have been learning about what makes a healthy diet. They have been discussing how we can have a little bit of everything that we love and have designed their own healthy meal plans.
The children have been learning about plants in Year 3, including functions of different parts of a plant. This week, they have explored two kinds of roots and their functions.
Year 4 have been exploring different sounds and how sounds can be produced. They have been listening to various aural stimuli and had to work out what the sound could be and how it might have been formed. The children planned an experiment for this week whereby they will be testing how far sound can travel.
In Year 5 they have been exploring living things and recently discovered the inner-workings of plants by dissecting a lily, in order to identify the various reproductive parts and explain what each does at certain stages.
Year 6 have been investigating electricity and how to make a working circuit. They have created their own circuits and experimented with how different voltages affect the brightness of a bulb.

Crocodile Maths in Year 1

In maths this week, Year 1 have been comparing numbers by using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. To help us remember, we have been using crocodile mouths to show what numbers are greater or less than any two given numbers. As a fun activity, we had dice that had the greater than, less than and equal to symbols on. We firstly had to choose two numbers and place them on a table with a space between them. Once we had done this, we rolled the die until it landed on the correct symbol needed to complete our number sentence.

The children in 3JP have shown maturity and resilience in how they have returned to school, found their feet and responsibility in acknowledging their own progression.  Many of the pupils have been rewarded for looking out for the younger children in Key Stage 1 during break times and around the school.  Year 3 have now decided to have a competition to find the ‘best’ class as they leave the playground.
This half term Year 3 have been reading Where the Wild Things Are to facilitate their learning in a range of subjects.  In English, pupils have written and created story maps and freeze frames to enable themselves to retell the story.  In PE, each class have begun to create a dance of their own based around the story and in Geography they have linked the story to deforestation.
In Computing the children are developing their understanding of algorithms. One lesson involved preparing instructions to create a jam sandwich.  Through the rest of the half term they will be using these to create a fully automated animated PowerPoint slideshow.

In 4BG we have been reinventing Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes version of The Three Little Pigs. We have created and used our own characters and settings to change the story. In Maths, we have started working on place value, deepening our understanding from previous years. We have also have been solving more complex number problems, showcasing our reasoning skills. In science we have planned our first investigation into sound are ready begin our experiments and during foundation lessons have been researching different inventions, explaining how their benefits to society.

1RS have made a great start to Year 1! We have been reading Roald Dahl’s version of Little Red Riding Hood and have had lots of fun acting out the story using puppets. We changed the villain to a different animal and are writing a new version of the story in our English lessons. In maths, we have been counting forwards and backwards which has helped us find one more and one less than a given number. We have been investigating new and old toys in History and noticed similarities and differences between toys from the past and present.
