Year 2 Blogging

At the start of this half term, 2JC pupils decided to start blogging for themselves. They were really careful to be specific, clear, informative and engaging about the things they've been doing:

This week was our first week back after 2 weeks holiday! This week we are learning about Remembrance Day and why we take part in Remembrance services each year. We are trying our hardest to learn the National Anthem as Year 2 will be taking part in the Remembrance Service at the Memorial outside the school building on Friday 11th November. We will take part alongside Year 6 and The Royal British Legion. Parents and Carers can join us from 10:45 around the memorial.

MAT Parent/Carer-Pupil Workshops

On Thursday, we held the second of this year’s MAT parent/carer/pupil workshops. These workshops are designed to help us work together to support the needs of pupils who are either already working beyond or showing potential to achieve at a level that goes beyond what is expected for children of their age, across the curriculum.
Amongst other things, we reviewed what it means to be working at ‘Greater Depth’, how to encourage children to love learning for the sake of learning, and the importance of developing resilience in facing challenges.
Children had a great time as they joined their parents and carers to try out a range of new problem solving and strategy games and puzzles that the school recently invested in. It’s fair to say that parents and carers enjoyed themselves too!

Feedback from these sessions has been extremely positive. Following on from the success of last year’s MAT Parent/Carer meetings, this year we have so far held workshops for families of pupils in Reception and Years 1, 2 and 6. Look out for an invitation to one of the forthcoming workshops for Years 3, 4 and 5.

Also, please remember, if there is an area in which you feel your child is achieving at an advanced level for their age group – perhaps in an activity that they take part in outside of school – do let us know. We are keen to work together to help every child achieve their best.

Further Year 6 Update

In English last week, Year Six analysed several wartime poems from both WWI and WWII and we drew inspiration from them to create our own wartime poems.

Each class presented a performance based on wartime; all three classes had been working hard to recreate an aspect from WWI. In 6VP they learnt the wartime song ‘Au revoir but Not Goodbye Soldier Boy’ which they harmoniously performed to parents and carers. 6KC had been learning about different games which children would have played during the early 1900s; the children incorporated their own actions to enhance their performances. 6CP worked hard on their performance poetry; these poems were ones that were either written during or inspired by war. Small groups shared their interpretations of these poems with parents and carers who attended the Remembrance service.

Writing Update

We have been working very hard across the school with our writing over the past week. As well as celebrating our work in our Star Award Assemblies, we also have placed the work of our ‘Star Writers’ on display in the corridor – well done to all of those whose work is currently in our celebratory frames!
Year six have been focussing on newspaper reports In recent weeks; we have been writing about a recent volcanic eruption which happened on the island of Hawaii and devastated both the inhabitants and the environment surrounding it.
Year five have also been completing newspaper articles, making sure they contain the suitable features to sound like young, budding reporters! Their report was based on the tragic death of a solider during World War I, which is both incredibly emotive and moving.
Year four have completed a week of persuasive writing; they have been using the appropriate features in order to persuade the reader to purchase an invention which they had created! Sounds very exciting – I may have to purchase one myself!
Year three were writing a set of instructions based on their book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. They were writing their instructions based on how to hunt your own wild thing! As well as creating some amazing writing, we now know how to track one for ourselves!
In year two, they have been creating a setting description based on a video clip which they watched in class. In the clip the main character (Zarah) lives in an African village and the children were describing what it looks like especially when comparing it to where they live. Thank you year two, we now have more details to help us imagine what Africa is like!
Year one have been on an adventure which took them out of this world! The children were lucky enough to visit the moon and when they returned, they kept us all up-to-date with what it is like by describing it for us – thanks year one!
In our reception classes, they have been practising how to write their names accurately! They have been using their phonic sounds and their understanding of letters to write their own names and some have even been writing thank you notes for teachers around the school which they would like to thank!
