In reception the topic for our last half term is animals. We will be focussing on a different animal each week; this week we are learning about fish. The story that we read this week was Barry the Fish with Fingers by Sue Hendra.
In literacy we have been adjectives to describe Barry and his friends from the story as well as comparing different types of fish. We have continued to practise using capital letters to start a sentence, finger spaces to separate our words, and full stops to end them.
In maths we have been recapping addition and subtraction strategies, making sure that we check the signs carefully when we are solving calculations. We have used a variety of equipment such as cubes, Numicon, teddies and counters. We even practised writing our own number sentences. Some children moved on to addition and subtraction word problems too! The children have also been exposed to the technical vocabulary for these operations such as plus, add, subtract, take away and minus.
In the last half term, our topic of focus for SEAL is changes. We may have over seven weeks left of the school year, but the summer holiday will be here before we know it! Therefore, we thought we would start talking about changes that will be happening soon including moving to year one. We discussed some of the changes that we will be experiencing in the next academic year including, meeting a new teacher, working with other adults, meeting new friends, learning new things, using a different playground and new toys. Then we talked about the things we are looking forward to in year one. We also discussed changes that have already happened in our lives, how we felt about those changes and how we can manage the feelings that changes provoke. Our responses reflect how much we have matured since starting school.

Spring Term in RRD

Last term we spent time looking at a range of Traditional Tales including Goldilocks and the three bears, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Little Pigs. The children loved hearing different versions of the tales and talking about how they have changed over time. We concluded our topic by creating our own version of Little Red Riding Hood with a twist. The children have become amazing little authors and have taken great pride in the books they have created. We also made some beautiful cards for Mothering Sunday and were thrilled that our special adults enjoyed them. It took a lot of concentration and fine motor skills to create them and they were very proud of the final result.

A Pupil's Perspective from E.R. in class RT

I like playing outside. My favourite thing is going on the slide. I love phonics. I love the letters that we learn. We've just been playing games to learn to spell. We’ve been helping Goldilocks make the right choices by making some new porridge for Baby Bear because Goldilocks ate all of Baby Bear’s porridge and she broke his chair. In maths times, we’ve been measuring, seeing how long I’ve been building cubes, standing on one leg, hopping and writing my name. We learned all about Mother’s Day and I tried to cut out some flowers for mummy. I love her because she gives me 3 kisses and 3 cuddles and sometimes she gives me some more.

We started the half term in Reception by focussing on the story, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Martians’. It is very similar to a story that we already know. As our focus in literacy was using adjectives, we have been describing lots of different things including characters from the story and rockets that we designed. We were very creative! In maths, we have been looking at addition, working on finding the total amount by putting two groups of objects together. Some of us have been writing number sentences to represent this, too! Topic was all about floating and sinking. We made predictions about which objects we thought would float and which would sink, then tested our ideas. A few weeks ago, we had our Winnie the Pooh themed day, where we completed lots of Winnie the Pooh based activities such as describing characters, decorating honey pots, building bridges and playing Pooh sticks. We had so much fun!

RG Superheroes!

This half term we have been focusing on Superheroes! We have had so much fun reading stories about different types of superheroes and developing our understanding of their powers and responsibility. One week the Evil Pea from the book Supertato came and captured the vegetables. We worked together to complete challenges to set them free. When we read the book ‘Super Worm’, we came up with a magical chant that rhymed to save Super Worm. For Children in Need we tried to persuade Pudsey to become a superhero. We then created our own superhero. We thought about what powers, costume and sidekick we would have. We are now ready to save the world!
