On Thursday we watched ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ with Mr Bennett, which linked brilliantly with our study of the Vikings this half term. We have also had fun this week in maths learning how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles. 5LC have now finished reading our Reading Skills book ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’. It has been really interesting reading it.
This week Y5 were not able to stay in our classes for the first part of the morning due to SATs going on, we let small groups of Y6 pupils use our classrooms. All of Y5 had to go into the sports hall for extra PE with Mr Bennett. On Monday and Wednesday we had to change into our PE kits and got into our houses and wore our house coloured bibs to play end ball. On Tuesday we went swimming in our usual groups. There are 3 groups, one in the teaching pool, one in the big pool but in the shallow end and one in the big pool but in the deep end. Science on Tuesday was extremely fun as we tested our parachutes by attaching eggs to them and testing them to see if any were good enough to stop the eggs from breaking.

Half Term 4 was very exciting and busy for us, besides the ongoing preparation for the Year 4 & 5 Spring Production of ‘Treasure Island’, we attended the ‘Online Safety Roadshow’ at the Civic Hall in Blackshots, celebrated Commonwealth Day & Holi (Festival of colours). In Mathematics we learned about fractions and how to apply our knowledge to solve worded problems. During our English lessons we explored the features of play scripts and how to write clear precise instructions in order to create a paper aeroplane, which was the focus of Science Week. Finally, on the 27th & 28th March we performed ‘Treasure Island’ to our parents; the dedication and commitment over the last term resulted in successful (according to the fabulous comments of parents) performances.
Here are some quotes to illustrate the pupils' perspective: Bethany, Actor 'All the actors went through a stage of being nervous and scared; remembering your lines, speaking with a loud and clear voice whilst performing the right action at the appropriate time. I was proud of myself as I am not usually someone who speaks in front of lots of people.' Eva, Dancer 'All the dancers had been practising their dances and making sure they were perfect on the day. I felt really nervous about it because I did not want to get it wrong.' Aiden, Choir 'We had lots of rehearsals to practise all the lyrics, which was sometimes boring, but it was worth it. We enjoyed performing it to the rest of the school and especially to our parents. It was fun and most people enjoyed wearing the costumes.' Children in Year 4 and 5 will be performing in their Spring Production on Wednesday 27th and Thurday 28th March. There will be a 9.30am and 1.45pm performance on both days. The performance times to which you are invited are: Wednesday: 9:30am 1:45pm Thursday: 9:30am 1:45pm We estimate that the performances will last for up to 60 minutes. Parents/carers who have watched the afternoon performance and will be collecting their children should exit the hall and wait on the playground outside their children’s classes for them to be released from classrooms at the end of the day.

Recently, Year 5 had the opportunity of becoming curators, as part of a workshop run by the Bata Heritage Centre, during which pupils restored artefacts that were damaged during the devastating fire of the local library (January 2017). We also had to catalogue each item: writing a short description; recording the catalogue number; using ICT skills to take photographs before and after the cleaning process. As part of the workshop 5NM - the lucky ones - were filmed; the footage will be streamed later in the year. Fortunately, the library is being rebuilt and we are hoping to visit it in the summer term.
